A Must See for Nature Lovers
Mallorca is much more than sun, sand and sea. Although these are the main attractions of the island, we do not have to forget about the beauty of its landscapes and the unique fauna and flora of its captivating natural reserves.
To begin with, at the north of the island we have the natural park of Mondrago (declared natural reserve in 1992). Mondrago is characterised for its diverse landscapes of mountain and sea. Hence not only will you find incredible virgin beaches, but also cliffs and big pine forests where autochthone species live. It is also interesting for the ethnology it represents: typical Majorcan and Mediterranean constructions such as towers, cabins or dry docks.
In the second place, the Cabrera Archipelago Maritime-Terrestrial National Park is another impressive and worth area to visit. The only way you can get there is by boat, whether touristic (from Colonia de Sant Jordi or from Portopetro) or your own (although you will have to get a permission). What you will find there are beautiful crystalline beaches and species that you will difficultly see anywhere else. Examples of species are the Audouin seagull, the osprey or the lizard. The marine fauna is also outstanding. Thanks to the crystalline waters of Cabrera you will be able to admire the typical Mediterranean Neptune grass and some marine species such as dolphins or starfishes, among others.
Thirdly, the icon of Mallorca: the natural spot of the Tramontana Range which is in fact declared a UNESCO heritage site. The coast is gifted with maerl beds and corals and admiring them is an spectacle of sensations. Regarding the forest area, it has a great variety of vegetation (pines, oak groves and olive groves). There, you will also find the natural monuments of Pareis Torrent and Fonts. The Tramontana Range also comprises other protected areas, for instance Sa Dragonera Natural Park, an islet where 361 species of plants have been identified from which 18 are endemic.
The last natural park that you must visit is the Llevant Peninsula‘s. It is interesting to know that a long time ago, farmers used to burn the pastures, custom that brought the extinction of the native forest of this area, just a few groves survived. Yet this burning made sprout other plants such as the ampelodesmos mauritanica and fan palms. One of the reasons why this area is relevant is because it protects a great population of birds such the booted eagle, the peregrine falcon, the Audouin seagull or the European shag. Therefore the Llevant’s peninsula is the perfect place for birdwatching.
The aforementioned areas are veritable paradises for feeling in communion with nature, and the best thing about it is that they will always be at your reach! The mountains kissing the sky and the waves crashing in the sand will surely make your heart leap.
