A glance at Alcudia

This is why you should rent a villa in Alcudia

The vibrant town of Alcudia is set in the north of Mallorca. Alcudia is a place full of history, it was actually founded by the Phoenicians and it is surrounded by a medieval wall. It is a town where you feel the presence of its history and culture. In addition to its beautiful cobblestone streets, the region has some of the best sandy beaches on the island.

The historic centre of Alcudia dates back to the 14th century after the Catalan conquest of the island. The king James II of Mallorca gave orders to build walls to protect the city from possible attacks. Alcudia was declared National Artistic Heritage in 1974, since it is the best walled enclave on the island.

You will see historic and beautiful buildings with great architectural value. The most remarkable ones are Gothic and Renaissance mansions and churches.  In summer, this romantic setting is accompanied by open-air theatre performances and concerts.  Additionally, Alcudia has the smallest Roman amphitheatre in Spain and the ancient Roman city of Pollentia.

In the pedestrian area you will find many different options to sample Mallorcan and Mediterranean gastronomy, and a great variety of shops. In fact, on Tuesdays and Sundays there is a traditional market where you can buy handcrafted products and food.

Pollentia

Alcudia has the remains of the Roman city of Pollentia which was founded after the Roman consul Quintus Caecilius' conquest in 123 BC. This meant the beginning of urban life on the island. The strategic point of Alcudia's bay was the main reason for the town's great urban development and indeed, it was the most important Roman town in the Balearic islands. Nowadays, you can visit areas such as the forum and the amphitheatre.
