Valldemossa is the quintessential Mallorcan mountain village. Just 20 minutes from Palma by car, it takes you back to the island's opulent past with cobbled streets and mansions of the old bourgeoisie. Walking through streets full of colourful flowers and local art and craft shops is a delight. Perhaps it was for this reason, Frédéric Chopin and his lover, the French writer George Sand decided to famously spend a winter in the town. If you wish, you can visit the room in the monastery where they stayed, still containing his piano and other artefacts.

You will likely have already fallen in love with this town en route, being located in a beautiful valley of orange trees. You can visit the Valldemossa Real Cartuja (Royal Carthusian Monastery), including the church, cloisters, and old pharmacy. The little ones can get lost in the hedge maze in the garden, a perfect place to take some pictures. Part of the monastery is King Sancho’s palace, later gifted to Carthusian monks.

Valldemossa has a lot of history to discover, including that of the locally renowned Archduke Lluis Salvador. Valldemossa also houses the Costa Nord cultural centre, created by Hollywood actor Michael Douglas a great lover of this town. You can watch a short documentary narrated by Michael Douglas himself, plus visitors have the chance to taste local Mallorcan products and watch traditional Mallorcan dance displays, called Ball de Bot.

The famous S’Estaca villa of Michael Douglas is on the coast from Valldemossa to Sóller, near Deià. Its name is due to a small coastal village called S'Estaca worth visiting for its charm. It can only be accessed with a short half-hour hike or via the sea. You also have the opportunity to visit the small port of Valldemossa, the entrance to the sea is through a gorge where you can see the best sunsets over the sea. From Valldemossa you can also visit the best viewpoints on the island. All of them are located in the Sierra de Tramuntana with views of the sea and the sunset, many of them from ancient watchtowers such as Torre de Ses Ànimes and Sa Foradada.

Mallorca Collection recommends this year-round destination for nature, culture and history lovers. In Valldemossa, Deiá, Soller or Esporles we have the best holiday villas for you to enjoy unbeatable views in a setting worthy of its Unesco Heritage designation.
